Comedy Knights Fresh Comedian of 2015 Finalist Robyn Perkins

InterviewPosted by Bobby Carroll Sat, September 05, 2015 09:35:08

What area of London do you currently live in or most associate yourself with?

CATFORD (it's not that bad)

How would you describe your act in five words?

Chatty, friendly and enagaging persona.

How long have you been doing comedy?

3.5 years

What is your day job?

Landscape Architect - though I am on sabbatical for a while to have a go at comedy.

What has been your worst job?

Fluffer/folder at a department store.

Why do you love comedy?

The feeling of making people laugh is unparalleled. Also, comedy is a unique medium to discuss anything. No subject is off limits. And people listen as their guards are down.

Who are your heroes?

Robin Ince. And while all wildly different comics and styles, I love Mitch Hedberg, Amy Schumer, Pat Monahan, Benny Boot and Bill Burr.

What made you bite the bullet and start performing?

Just thought it looked fun. So on a whim. But I started with a course, which is not nearly 'biting the bullet'. Its more 'lets stick your toes in and realise its a luke-warm paddle pool.'

What was your first gig like?

Amazing. Again, end of a course, 60-70 people, all supported. It may be my best gig yet. Kidding. Kind of.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

Comedically? Being accepted into AAA at the Pleasance at the Fringe. Or English Comedian of the Year Finalist (assuming this gig doesn't count).

What has been your favourite gig?

English Comedian of the Year Finals at the Udderbelly was awesome. But I also sometimes do sets at a music night called Vin's Night In. Amazing artists. It doesn't seem like it would work, but it is amazing. Best crowds ever.

And describe your worst?

There are 3-4 that stand out. One of which was the Bath New Act Finals, 2012. I had been going 3 months, only had sex material, and tried to sell it to a prude crowd, in Bath on a Sunday. The review was awful, pinning me as 'Spectacularly Obscene'. I have since changed. Kind of.

Weirdest heckle?

Some woman in Hitchen shhushed me and told me to stop talking because I am American and a foreigner.

What is the best thing about being a comedian?

The feeling of making people laugh.

What is the biggest lesson you've learnt?

Take your time. Nothing can replace experience.

Where do you hope to be in ten years with your comedy?

Working full time, doing just writing and performing.

Any other aspirations?

Save the world with comedy.

What's you favourite joke by another act or from your childhood?

What did the horse say to the unicorn? Dickhead -Jess Fostikew

I'm circumcised cuz I don't come from the hood. -Bo Burnham

It's a shame Jesus could never go swimming. -Alan Power
